1 Shodashopachara or Shodasa Upacahar is the process of performing the rituals of Pujan that includes altogether sixteen Sevas (services).

2 It is the most widely accepted and followed a system of Pujan in Hindu shrines and residential Yagna.

3 Dhyaana is invoking the deity through meditation and engaging our mind, body with the god.

4 Aavaahana is respectfully inviting the deity into the fane (devasthan).

5 Aasana is requesting the deity to accept the seat offered to him in the altar.

6 Paadya is washing the deity’s feet by pouring clean water with sacred leaves.

7 Arghya is offering the deity water to rinse hands and face.

8 Aachamana is a Vidhi where water is offered to the deity and also drinking it our-self.

9 Snaan means bathing the deity with various auspicious items that include, oil, milk and all.

10 Vastra refers to dressing the deity with jewelry and clothes.

11 Yagnopaveetha or Yajnopavita involves offering the deity a Jandem (sacred thread) and Akshathas (only unbroken rice grains).

12 Gandha indicates spreading fresh sandalwood paste on the deity.

13 Pushpa indicates offering fresh flowers while chanting the deity’s names.

14 Dhoopa is when incense smoke is spread throughout the altar and Deepa stands for lighting lamp to the deity.

15 Naivedya includes offering food to the deity as Prasad and Taambula indicates offering the deity a mix of Supari (betel nut) and sacred leaves.

16 In Pradakshina or Namaskara, devotee or priest walks around the altar by glorification of the deity.

17 Pushpanjali or Neerajanam is the last step where the deity is offered flowers and final prayers. Some also refer to it as Aarti, where all sing mantra and stotras. Stay tuned to our channel for more updates.
